Vendor Name: Canon
Version Number:
Date Published:
Date Retired:
Program Description: The proposed course is intended for end users of the Canon imagePRESS C1 printer with Q1 raster image processor
(RIP). The duration of the course will be two teaching days at the Canon Customer Training Centre located in Room
MG.13 at Sydney Institute, Ultimo. There will be a maximum of five learners per course. In early 2007 it is intended for
the course to be run at other Canon locations in Victoria and Queensland. The courses will be promoted and sold by
Canon. When the learner achieves a satisfactory level of understanding in the opinion of the teacher, Canon will grant
the learner a certificate entitled “Canon Certified Operator of the imagePRESS C1”.
As a result of the two day course learners should show evidence of their understanding of the following subject matter.
Where an action would be required on the part of an operator the learner should show their ability to perform that action
without supervision.

Program Outcomes
1. imagePRESS C1 & Q1 RIP System Basics The learner should become familiar with the physical attributes of the imagePRESS C1, in particular: • Loading consumables • Acceptable print media. • Tray Association. • Paper Catalogue. • Auto-gradation (three types). Particular attention should be given to the importance of auto-gradation on a regular basis because that action assists in the regulation of consistent colour output.
2. Command Workstation The learner should show a working knowledge of the Command Workstation1 interface and workflow. In particular the learner should be able to: • Articulate which file types can be printed from Command Workstation. • Merge jobs. • Preview jobs before submission to print. • Articulate the difference between “print”, “hold” and “process & hold” instructions.
3. Page Printer Description Options The learner should be able to navigate the options available in the Page Printer Descriptions that can be created for the Q1 RIP.
4. Introduction to Colour Managed Printing Workflows Learners must show some basic understanding of the following concepts: • Colour Managed Output. • Additive & Subtractive Colour (RGB & CMYK) • Colour Space (sRGB compared to Adobe RGB) • Colour Gamut and Colour Gamut Mismatch • Rendering Intents • ICC Output Profiles for specific paper stocks.
5. Color-Wise ProTools2 The learner should show an understanding of the following components of Color-Wise ProTools and the use of the EFI Color Profiler (ES1000)3: • Colour Set-Up • Profile Manager • Spot-On • Colour Editor • Calibration • Screening
6. Printing from Adobe Creative Suite 2 Applications Learners must be able to print sample documents from all of the current Adobe Creative Suite 2 (CS2) applications. Learners must show an understanding of how the various printing options in CS2 applications will impact the output of the imagePRESS C1.
7. Printing from Quark Express The primary design applications for this course are Adobe CS2 applications. However, on request by the learner instruction should be given in printing from Quark Express to the imagePRESS C1.
8. Printing using Fiery Freeform4 The learner should be able to print Microsoft PowerPoint documents using Fiery Freeform. The learner should understand that Fiery Freeform reduces processing time of Microsoft PowerPoint documents by processing the background image only once.
9. Printing Documents using Finishing Options The learner should be able to print documents selecting stapling, punching, tabs, envelopes and booklet making (subject to the finishing options fitted to the training machine located in MG.13).
10. An introduction to Job Definition Format (JDF) The learner should be able to identify JDF instructions (job tickets) that accompany files for printing.
11. Printing Using the Optional Products Where there is adequate teaching time, it is desirable that the learner is made conversant in the following optional products5: • Graphic Arts Option 2 • Production Printing Package • EFI Impose (including Pitstop for PDF late editing) • Hotfolders
